1. What causes Dark Undereye Circles & what can be done about them?

There can be one or several reasons together which may contribute to a darkened or sunken look.

  • lack of sleep
  • iron or other vitamin deficiencies
  • sickness
  • hyperpigmentation
  • excessive visible vascularization (due to medications such as Retin A)
  • visible blood vessels due to fast loss, thin, aging skin or hereditary thinness or superficial vessels
  • fat loss in general which causes a sunken look

What can be done about it...

  • lack of, or too much sleep: increase or decrease your sleep time to see what works best for you.
  • iron or other vitamin deficiencies:  See your general practitioner or ask about a multi vitamin.  Different individuals can be deficient in different vitamins -- our bodies are all different.
  • sickness: usually this will subside after you are well.  Be sure to get plenty of rest and eat a balanced diet without too many refined carbohydrates and sugars.
  • hyperpigmentation: often seen in ethnic persons such as persons of Indian descent.  Hydroquinone is a good option as it can lighten the skin.  Hydroquinone or Kojic acid is often used in ethnic and Caucasian patients to lighten the skin before laser treatments, peels, etc.  The lack of melanin visible in the skin before a laser procedure can greatly decrease the chances of postoperative hyperpigmentation.
  • excessive visible vascularization (due to medications such as Retin A): many times when this is the case vessels can be removed or zapped using various lasers or even intense pulsed light.  You do not want to destroy all the vessels in the eye are.
  • visible blood vessels due to fast loss, thin, aging skin or hereditary thinness: for deeper visible vascularity, fat grafting works very well.  The facial fat loss we experience due to aging can significantly unearth the highly vascular area of the eye.  The blood vessels are more visible when this happens creating a darker look.
  • fat loss in general which causes a sunken or hollow look:  The facial fat loss we experience due to aging can significantly increase the sunken look as well as unearth the highly vascular area of the eye.  This can also be remedied with fat grafting or some injectable fillers

2. When can Dark Undereye Circles treatments be performed?

There really is no set age although some treatments may not be appropriate for children or teens.

3. What does a typical Dark Undereye Circles Removal consultation entail?

After checking a few surgeons' or physicians' (dermatologists' as well) backgrounds and credentials, you will make an appointment for a consultation.  You will meet with these surgeons and discuss your goals and you will disclose all information regarding your health; if you smoke, what medications or vitamins you presently take, etc. -- this is very important.  You really should consider smoking cessation as this can significantly decrease healing in more invasive procedures.  Visit the Medication & Supplements List for more information.

You will discuss your complaints and concerns and discuss the problems or complaints, the amount that can be improved, etc.  Your doctor will explain the techniques or treatments which may be most appropriate for you.  He or she should discuss the risks associated with the specific treatment types with you, as well.

You will also discuss the available anesthesia that will be used for your procedure if applicable.  Most non-invasive procedures require either either no anesthesia or light, topical anesthesia.   More invasive procedures, such as fat grafting, are performed under either Light Sleep Sedation, Twilight or regional -- sometimes even local with oral sedation.  However, some docs may use General IV Sedation.  Either way, discuss this beforehand as many people are not aware of the risks of Anesthesia.  If you do go under Deep General, ascertain that the anesthesiologist is certified.  Please read the All About Anesthesia Page -- the risks regarding anesthesia should be considered for a fully informed choice.

If you would like more information on Consultations or a list of questions to ask your surgeon please visit the Consultation Help Page.  If you should choose to book or reserve a surgery date (if applicable) you will usually give a deposit to hold your treatment date, however less expensive treatments usually don't require this.  Most times if you cancel a few days beforehand, this amount is usually  non-refundable.  After paying your deposit and scheduling a treatment date, you may also schedule a pre-operative appointment.

4. How is a Dark Undereye Circles treatment performed?

This section largely depends upon the type of treatment sought.

  • hyperpigmentation:  Please see our Hyperpigmentation section for more information on this treatment.
  • visible superficial blood vessels:  Please see our Lasers Treatment or Intense Pulsed Light sections for more information on these treatments.
  • visible blood vessels due to fast loss: Please see our Fat Grafting section for more information on this treatment.
  • sunken or "hollow-eyed" look: Again, see our Fat Grafting section for more information on this treatment.

5. What should I expect post-treatment?

This section largely depends upon the type of treatment sought, as well, due to the various treatments available.  Some may be only a period of peeling and redness, some more like a burn, some treatments may involve significant swelling.  Please see the above sections and read its respective recovery information section in its entirety.

6. Do Dark Undereye Circles Removal treatments hurt?

This also depends upon the treatment chosen, some treatments have been reported as having discomfort during or after treatment, some quite painful -- although the possible accompanying pain of all treatments should be alleviated by prescribed pain relievers.  Some treatments such as hydroquinone usually involves no pain whatsoever.

Surgical procedures such as fat grafting may involve significant swelling and bruising.  Please discuss this with your physician before your treatment.

7. When will I be able to see the results?

Anywhere from immediately to several months pos-treatment for hyperpigmentations to several weeks for other treatments.  Discuss this as well with your physician as this is largely dependent upon the problem, the treatment and the post-treatment maintenance.

8. What are the risks of Dark Undereye Circle Removal?

Although this section also depends upon the treatment -- risks can be anywhere from permanent hypo- or hyperpigmentation to infection.  Please read the respective Risks & Complication Sections for the appropriate treatment for your own individual needs.

  • hyperpigmentation:  Please see our Hyperpigmentation section for associated risks and complications.
  • visible superficial blood vessels: Please see our Laser Treatment or Intense Pulsed Light sections for  associated risks and complications.
  • visible blood vessels due to fast loss: Please see our Fat Grafting section for associated risks and complications.  Fat Grafting is very effective, but is not without its risks.
  • sunken or hollow-eyed look: Again, see our Fat Grafting section for associated risks and complications.

9. What is Arnica montana or Bromelain, I have heard that these homeopathics reduce swelling and bruising? Which is the best kind to take?

also known as: Mountain Tobacco, Mountain Arnica, Common Arnica, Leopard's Bane and Sneezewort
plant family:
Asteraceae
type:
Herbaceous perennial

parts used:
Roots and flowers
description:
Arnica montana or Leopard's Bane is a perennial herb, growing close to the ground. The leaves form a flat rosette, from the center of which rises a flower stalk, 1 to 2 feet high, bearing orange-yellow flowers. The rhizome is dark brown, cylindrical, usually curved, and bears brittle wiry rootlets on the under surface.
habitat: Indigenous to Central Europe, in woods and mountain pastures, although it has been found in England and Southern Scotland.
warning: This herb should NEVER be taken in raw form. This plant, like many medicinal plants if ingested, can cause intestinal bleeding, abdominal cramping and sickness. Homeopathy is the medicinal use of tinctures and suspensions using herbs and other plants and should never be consumed without proper preparation. Only respectable homeopathic remedies and tinctures should be consumed.

from the plant of the: Pineapple
also known as:
Ananas, Nanas, Pina
plant family:
Bromeliaceae
type: herbaceous perennial
parts used:
mostly in the stems of pineapples, but some fruit is used as well.
description:
2 1/2 to 5 ft. high with a spread of 3 to 4 ft. The plant is like a  thick stem with a rosette of wide, waxy leaves. These pointed green, red, and white/off white striped leaves are approximately 18 - 70 inches long and graced with a spiny needle-like tip.
The plant produces a sweet to tangy and sometimes sour fruit that is yellow to white in color. The unpeeled fruit is brownish with a hard, spiky covering and a large green sprout from it crown. The fruit is shaped like a coffee can with rounded ends and is about 10-12 inches long usually when considered prime and may even weigh up to 10 lbs.

habitat: Indigenous to southern Brazil and Paraguay, The fruit is now grown all over in green houses and in the fields of Spain, Guatemala, Hawaii and more. The pineapple is a tropical plant and thrives in hot, humid places. Although it can survive cold snaps, it is not recommended for the more northern areas if intended to be grown outdoors.

Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory formula containing the proteolytic enzyme from the stems of pineapples. Proteolytic enzymes are capable of dissolving proteins. It is most often used after sports injuries, to relive edema and after surgical procedures to help with swelling.

ALWAYS ASK YOUR SURGEON FIRST BEFORE TAKING ANY MEDICATION.

 10. Are the results permanent?

This depends upon your post-treatment habits, maintenance and individual body.  For hyperpigmentations,  repeat sun exposure or medication use can continue to cause hyperpigmentations.  Hormonal imbalances can continue to cause hyperpigmentations.  Some patients may need to continue hydroquinone or Kojic acid use to prohibit hyperpigmentation reformation after their initial removal process.

For vascular visibility due to medications, if you continue to use such angiogenesis-inducing medications then you will continue to experience superficial angiogenesis.

For vascularity visibility due to fat loss, this depends upon the survival of the grafts, the future fat loss and again.
